ACE Handyman Services: new name, new brand, same service | South County Life Magazine
It is this time of year when the days get longer, warmer and sunnier and nature beckons. It’s also the time of year when a few steps outside the door reminds of the aftermath of winter: a porch that needs sanding and staining, a fence that needs painting, patio tiles that need to be replaced.
While these tasks may seem like an easy fix for some, not everyone is gifted with the craftsmanship necessary to do them well. Fortunately for these people, local outlets like Ace Handyman Services are just a phone call away – and a few miles away – and ready to take on any projects.
Formerly known as Handyman Matters, founded by Louis Paiva in 2010, Handyman Services was acquired by Ace Hardware in September. Paiva remains the owner of the franchise. This service is headquartered at 7610 Post Road in North Kingstown and has a fleet of approximately six craftsmen, many of whom have been in business for decades and respond to calls across the state.
“There’s not a lot we don’t do,” said Paiva. “Our main focus lately has been kitchens and bathrooms.”
He noted that these are two of the top five most popular projects this time of year, along with work related to fencing, repairs to decks and stairs, and seemingly minor chores like cleaning gutters.
“This is a time of year to think about the outside,” said Paiva.
For those who need a little inspiration, PANTONE chose Classic Blue (19-4052) as the color of the year, an annual designation. In describing this choice, PANTONE says it is “a timeless and lasting shade of blue … elegant in its simplicity, [and] indicates the sky at dusk. “Color, they continue, is restorative, conveys a feeling of peace and tranquility, offers refuge, promotes focus, attracts clarity, re-centers thoughts and has the potential to promote resilience.
And for those less concerned about color and preferring to highlight the texture of the natural wood on their patios and fences, Consumer Reports recently reviewed 28 solid, semi-transparent, and clear wood stains to see which ones hold up best (the full report may it be) found on their website). The best stains should last three to five years on decks and longer on siding and fences.
In consumer reports, it has been found that the best solid wood stains are Behr Deckplus Solid Color Waterproofing Wood Stain. Benjamin Moore Arborcoat Solid Deck & Siding; Cabot solid color acrylic panel stain; and Olympic Elite Advanced Stain and Sealant in a solid. The best semi-transparent wood stain, it is said, is Behr Premium Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Stain & Sealer.
These decisions can never end and seem a bit overwhelming. Fortunately, there are companies like Handyman Services out there to help people start this process and keep it going through to completion.
Working with Paiva for seven years, Tammy Maloney said a lot of her job is answering messages and getting back to people immediately. “In our daily lives, we like people to follow up,” she said, noting that this is part of the work culture at Handyman Services.
“We make an appointment and are there when we say we’ll be there,” she said. “We are proud of that.”
Paiva agreed, adding, “As soon as we start a job, we man it until it’s over.”
