Demand Surges For Home Appliance Repairs As People Continue To Work, Go To School Remotely – CBS Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Safer-at-home orders have predictably led to an increase in the use of household appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines and dryers.
The people who fix these devices say they are getting more calls about machines and business is booming as a result.
“We work almost all day, seven days a week. You wake up at 7 am and come home at 7, 12 hours, so we’re crowded now, ”said Robert Villatoro, equipment repair specialist. “Right now we’re booked three to four days in advance so we have to turn people down or tell them to call someone, or sometimes we try to fix bugs.”
The experience is similar for other equipment workers across Southern California.
Robert Ehrid, sales manager at Appliance Outlet in Northridge, said pedestrian traffic has doubled since the store reopened after a five-week shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“After we reopened, business increased because we can produce,” said Ehrid.
With the increase in the number of people at home and the hot summer temperatures, the air conditioning will also run longer than normal, so these companies too are seeing a surge in demand and no end in sight.
“It’s like the phone is directly connected to the thermometer. When it gets hot the phone rings like crazy. When it cools down things calm down, ”said David Kahn, owner of Kahn Air Conditioning.
