Fireplace possible cause of fire at North Side apartment complex

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Fire Investigators are trying to find out what caused a fire in an apartment complex on the North Side.

The fire started at around 4 a.m. Tuesday in a Tuscany Apartments building on the 1200 block of Patricia.

“It was actually around the chimney, and by the time I got here, a quarter of the roof was already on fire,” said battalion chief Brooke Hildreth of the San Antonio Fire Department.

When the arriving crews realized that they were already at a disadvantage, they first called a second alarm and brought even more help to the place, including two platform trucks that could pour water into the fire from above.

“As soon as they started throwing water, it went down very quickly,” said Hildreth.

The residents of the building fled quickly.

Firefighters helped many of them get to a clubhouse in the apartment complex to get out of the cold and get help from the American Red Cross.

Hildreth said 12 of the 16 apartments in the building were damaged, some large.

Fire investigators look for the cause of the fire.

Hildreth said they had a suspicion how it might have started.

“It was very near the fireplace,” she said. “I know a lot of people try to stay warm and start a fire. But it is being investigated. “
