Mr. Appliance takes customer service to the next level

ABERDEEN – The elevator clearance looks something like this: Mr. Appliance is a home and commercial appliance repair and service company that focuses on customer service and works with the customer’s schedule first.

And that’s not an understatement.

“The biggest key piece that sets us apart is the service on your schedule,” said local franchise owner Cory Barber.

Mr. Appliance’s business model means customers don’t have to wait at home all day for a repairman. Rather, the customer chooses the day and a preference for morning or afternoon service. Mr. Appliance will set up the most efficient route that day and email the customer within two hours of when a repairman is expected. That email also includes a photo of who is providing the service. This is another win for the customer.

“We always want the same service or the next day,” said Barber. That means adapting or expanding the workforce as demand increases.

The company also has a “Leave” No Trace Policy. Without the device being repaired and the likelihood of the customer being there for the repair, they wouldn’t even know the company was there. Shoes are covered, mats are put down, and blankets are used to move furniture or cover countertops, etc.

Mr. Appliance maintains all major household appliances. “I can’t think of a brand that we don’t serve,” said Barber.

The Aberdeen franchise opened its doors in the first half of May, just five months after Barber began setting up a business here. So far, the response from the community has been really good, Barber said, while recognizing a recent push to brand awareness and making his name known.

The closest Mr. Appliance is in Sioux Falls, he said. The range of the Aberdeen location is the Watertown and Brookings area and 50 miles of Aberdeen and Watertown and approximately the same range of Brookings, excluding the south, as it enters the Sioux Falls franchise area.

Barber graduated from Groton High School in 1989. Military service and engineering training would keep him away from the area for a while. But being family and always in the technical field eventually brought him back to his roots.

“I have a real passion for solving problems and finding solutions for technical devices. There’s a lot of job satisfaction in that, ”he said.

It was time for him and his wife Rebecca to work for themselves, which meant figuring out what and how. Now he doesn’t regret choosing a franchise.

“We felt that there was a lack of service-related areas (locally) and we thought this business would be a good fit for that area,” he said.

The longevity of Mr. Appliance, the availability of marketing materials and resources, and the lessons already learned from others made the franchise purchase even more attractive.

“A franchise has real advantages. It already has a proven business model, ”he said. “So we could just get started. All you have to do is bring it all together. “
