Prepare your fireplace for the holidays

San Diego is known for its great temperate weather, but even Southern Californians need an internal heat source during the cooler winter months.

Many homes have fireplaces and chimneys that are on during the vacation, and fireplaces are a necessity for homes in the mountains where it snows or for homes without central heating.

Because chimneys and chimneys are used so rarely, homeowners often don’t think about the maintenance needs of such utilities. Julian Margo, CEO of Chimney Sweeps Inc., wants homeowners to add safety inspections and cleaning services to their home improvement checklist before winter comes.

According to Margo, approximately 40% of homes in San Diego have fireplaces and chimneys. Every year there are around two to four fireplace fires in the region.

The main reason most chimneys catch fire is because creosote forms, although this is not always the case with chimneys here. Although classic chimneys are often made of brick, many of the chimneys in San Diego are pre-made metal boxes surrounded by wooden frames. “The contractors who build these chimneys make mistakes quite often, and maybe not in the first or fourth year, but over time these chimneys become fire hazards,” Margo said. “Half of the chimney fires are not caused by creosote igniting, but by the structural malformation that overheats the system and ignites the wooden frame that surrounds the combustion chamber.”

In addition, many fireplaces now run on gas, which can lead to a carbon monoxide leak. Margo found that carbon monoxide is odorless, tasteless and can be quite deadly.

San Diego Gas & Electric and the National Fire Protection Association recommend annual inspections of chimneys and chimneys.

If maintenance of a fireplace or fireplace is interrupted, it can cost tens of thousands of dollars to repair or replace.

“In San Diego, we love to take care of our homes because they’re one of our greatest assets,” said Margo. “The chimney is often a weak and exposed point that is overlooked.”

Chimney Sweeps Inc. provides chimney cleaning, inspection, repair, relining, and rebuilding services.

Every year, Chimney Sweeps is inundated with service calls over the holidays when people start turning on their fireplaces and using their chimneys for family gatherings and chilly nights. Only then do many homeowners find a problem with their fireplace or chimney.

Margo suggests that homeowners call the company early for services and now is the perfect time to do so.

Chimney Sweeps Inc. is running some great specials to encourage homeowners as well.

Currently, a full chimney cleaning and inspection costs $ 99 instead of the usual $ 199, and an inspection service is currently only $ 59.

“Make sure the chimney and fireplace are on your list as they need to be checked and serviced,” Margo said. “It’s really important – we want a fire-free winter in the chimney this year.
