Sonos dual Sub home theater setups are now supported
Sonos provides support for two subwoofers in a home theater setup so those who want maximum bass can wirelessly connect two Sonos Sub to the system. The update will double the low-end for those with larger rooms – or just an unbroken appetite for bass in their action movies – while keeping everything wireless at the same time.
According to Sonos, the new feature is a frequent request from its customers, along with professional installers who use Sonos components. While not required for a home theater setup, the powered subwoofer can still help make things even more immersive.
The nifty integration of the Sub into a home theater setup has long been one of the features of Sonos. With the latest Arc soundbar, for example, the wireless subwoofer not only automatically supports the low-end, but the Arc intelligently changes its EQ profile accordingly. This new dual sub support works when the subwoofer is paired with an Arc, Beam, Playbar, Playbase or Amp.
There is a little fine print to note. The biggest consideration is that at least one of the subs in the home theater setup needs to be a sub-model (Gen 3) that Sonos announced along with Arc this May. It has more processing power on board, which according to Sonos is required for the configuration with two subwoofers.
You will also need to run the Sonos S2 app and firmware on the entire system. Twin Sub support is added as an update today. You must therefore run the Sonos app and install the latest firmware version in order to pair two subs in a home theater setup.
The Sub (Gen 3) is priced at $ 699. With a pair of these, an Arc, and a One SL for surround back work, you’re looking at around $ 2,475 right now.
However, if you don’t need Arc’s voice control there is a slightly cheaper option for the soundbar. The Sonos Arc SL Shadow Edition will be exclusive to Costco when it becomes available at member-only retailers later in December, dropping the regular Arc’s built-in mics. It is also offered in an exclusive finish. It’s priced at $ 749.99, a $ 50 savings over the standard Arc.
